Position Rank

How early your brand appears in AI responses.

Overview

The Position Rank measures how prominently your brand appears in AI-generated responses based on its ranking position.

It answers a simple question: How early does our brand appear in the answer?

While Visibility tells you whether your brand appears, Position Rank tells you where your brand shows up when it is mentioned.

How Position Rank is Calculated

Ansehn's Position Rank formula

This gives you the average position of your brand across the responses where it is mentioned.

Why Position Rank Matters

1. The "First Choice" Advantage

  • Competitive Rank: It tracks your competitive placement (e.g., 1st, 2nd, 3rd) across multiple responses, helping you determine if the AI consistently views you as the premier solution.

  • User Attention: Placement within an output dictates user attention. A brand mentioned early on carries significantly more weight, which is why a lower position number signifies higher visibility.

2. Measuring Quality of Presence

  • Prominence over Presence: The Position Rank measures how prominently your brand is featured rather than just tracking sheer volume. This ensures you are evaluating the true quality of your mentions within the AI-generated answers.

How to Interpret Position Rank

  • Lower is better

  • A score of 1 means your brand appears first

  • A higher number means your brand appears later in the answer

A strong Position Rank means your brand is usually mentioned early. A weaker Position Rank means your brand may still be visible, but often appears behind competitors.

Example

If your brand appears in position 1 in one response and position 4 in another, your Position Rank is 2.5.

That means your brand appears, on average, in position 2.5 across the tracked responses where it is mentioned.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a good Position Rank?

A good Position Rank is one that stays as close to 1 as possible. The closer your score is to 1, the more often your brand appears first.

Can I have a high Visibility but a weak Position Rank?

Yes. Your brand may appear in many responses, but still be mentioned later in the answer rather than near the top.

How is Position Rank different from Visibility?

Visibility tells you whether your brand appears. Position Rank tells you where your brand appears when it does show up.

How is Position Rank different from Share of Voice?

Share of Voice measures how much of the conversation your brand owns compared to competitors. Position Rank measures how early your brand appears in the response.

What should I do if my Position Rank is high?

A higher Position Rank means your brand is often mentioned later in the answer. In that case, review the prompts and competitor patterns where others are being surfaced earlier, then improve the relevance and authority of your content for those topics.
